History of roulette

Roulette is a casino game with a long history. While there is much disagreement regarding its official origins. Most would place its beginning in France during the 18th century. The reason for the uncertainty is that some believe the game may be even older having been played in the Far East. The present form of the game can with certain be traced back to 1796 where historic documents show it was played in Paris, France.

The early history of Roulette involved evolution in the construction of the roulette wheel. In 1843, the game evolved when another version of the roulette wheel was made. Two Frenchmen found the inspiration for the changes when they were on holiday at a German spa. This provided some competition for the wheel currently in use. About 40 years later, another roulette wheel came on the scene having the numbers one through 28 imprinted on it. It also featured two other numbers, a single zero and a double zero. There was also a spot for an American eagle. If the ball landed on any of these three spots, the croupier automatically would win unless players placed their money on these spots.

Roulette spread over the 19th century from Europe to the United States. The roulette wheel used today in European roulette came into its own as it began to be used in the casinos of Monte Carlo. The roulette wheel that came to America saw its own evolution. An additional double zero was added to the wheel which makes up the roulette wheel used in American roulette today. Also, another change was mounting the American roulette wheel to a table. This was done for not only convenience but for security as well. Today, the game of roulette continues to evolve with the times. Now, the game can be found at online casinos.
